Filling out online surveys is still one of the easiest ways to make extra money from home.

Today, it is in high demand more than ever because more and more brands are testing the market before they launch their products, and that’s why they need you!

But to be honest, online surveys probably won’t make you rich, but they can still provide you with extra income and gift cards for your favorite brands. However, I prefer online surveys that pay cash, so in this post, I share my favorite online focus groups that pay cash.

2. Make and Sell Handmade Items

3. Pinterest Virtual Assistant (VA)

Do you love scrolling through Pinterest for hours on end?

Then why not start freelancing your skills like Megan, who is a Pinterest VA (Virtual Assistant). In this interview, she explains step-by-step how she makes $7,000/Month while working from home with her two kids.

She is also the creator of the course Pinterest Ninja, which helps you master your own Pinterest account (over 5,000 students have taken this course), or how to become a Pinterest VA in VA Ninja, which has been taken by over 2,500 students.

4. Launch a Virtual Assistant Bookkeeping Business

If you have a knack for tracking finances and aren’t afraid of numbers, why not start offering virtual bookkeeping from home?

Because, despite what you may have heard, you do not need previous experience or to be an accountant to start your own freelance business.

It’s true, you do not need a degree in order to become a bookkeeper.

However, for you to qualify as a great bookkeeper, you must be able to think “outside the box” and have an excellent eye for detail.

The other quality you should possess is your willingness to solve problems for your clients since you will become their go-to person.

In addition, you should know that mompreneurs and mom bloggers require people like you to manage their finances (myself included).

Because small business owners know to outsource and delegate tasks that they do not excel at so they can spend more time growing their business. That’s when you offer your service and prove that your service can provide peace of mind, you’re likely to get clients.

5. Sell Unwanted Items Online for Profit

Have you ever heard the saying “another person’s trash is another person’s treasure”?

This is so true when it comes to selling items you no longer need.

Because to you, they may seem useless, but to someone else, they are worth a lot.

So, how about decluttering your home and making extra money while doing so?

Personally, I’ve made over $10,000 selling old clothes, bags, and shoes, as well as furniture such as lamps, bed frames, old chairs, jars, picture frames, and vintage jewelry.

Where to sell your stuff online?

  • Gumtree. What is Gumtree? Gumtree is a FREE Marketplace to buy in your local area! You can sell and find cars, furniture, electronics, jobs, real estate & more for sale. That means on Gumtree you can list your items as well as services.
  • eBay. What is eBay? eBay is the world’s online marketplace which means it’s a place for buyers and sellers to come together and trade almost anything! eBay works by the seller lists an item on eBay, from antiques to cars, books to sporting goods or handmade items. The seller chooses to accept only bids for the item (an auction-style listing) or to offer the Buy It Now option, which allows buyers to purchase the item right away at a fixed price. In an online auction, the bidding opens at a price the seller specifies and remains on eBay for a certain number of days. And then buyers can place bids on the item. When the listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid wins. Alternatively, in a Buy It Now listing, the first buyer willing to pay the seller’s price gets the item. Trading on eBay is easy and it’s fun! Best of all, you can be certain that someone is looking for what you are selling.
  • Facebook marketplace. Do you have boxes of items sitting around that are too nice to give away but you can’t be asked to post them either? Then selling them on marktplace for profit could be for you. Because the benefit of Facebook marketplace is that you can sell to buyers in your local area which means you don’t have to ship the items. But that also means you need to be ok with strangers coming to your front door to pick up their items. Due to Covid I started offering contact less pickup where the buyer can either bank transfer or PayPal me the money, or leave it under the doormat (old school, I know haha). In exchange I’ll leave the items outside the front door (I’m still selling baby clothes and stuff here regularly.)
  • Depop: What is Depop? Depop is the fashion marketplace app where the next generation come to discover unique items. With a global community buying, selling, and connecting to make fashion more inclusive, diverse, and less wasteful. This is what transforming fashion looks like. Personally, I’ve made thousands selling clothing, and vintage jewelry (but I’ve also bought quite a few things on there).

How to list items online

  1. Make sure you have time to prepare your listing
  2. Find out what other items sell for and at what price point to get an idea of how much you can charge for yours
  3. You should clean your items or wipe them down, since nobody wants to buy something with marks or stains on it.
  4. If you still have it, put it in the original box, since it instantly increases its value. I’m a bit of a geek, but I keep most boxes and packaging because I’m always thinking of reselling them.
  5. Make sure you take good photos in the best light (daylight) and upload as many pictures as you are allowed. Because more photos will mean a greater chance of selling it.
  6. Look at similar items and take note of how they are titled to get ideas for your own.
  7. Make your price competitive with others selling similar items so that potential buyers are incentivized to buy your product
  8. Communication is key. Therefore you should respond to buyer inquiries as quickly as possible.

Considerations When Earning Money From Home

There are a few things you need to consider when you’re working from home. So let’s go over some basics together.

Tax

Even if you work from home, you still need to declare your income at the end of the tax year.

But every country has a tax-free threshold, which means that whatever you earn up to a certain amount won’t be taxed. The tax-free threshold varies, but it’s usually around $15K-18K that you can earn extra without getting taxed.

Business account

While working from home it’s important that you keep your personal and business finances separate.

To help you do that you need to set up a new chequing account which you then only use to pay for your business expenses and get paid into.

Superannuation

What is superannuation? You save superannuation (or ‘super’) while you’re working, so once you retire you will have money to live on.

In most cases, your employer does that for you, but when you’re working for yourself, you have to take matters into your own hands and put money aside every month.

Vacation or sick leave

If you work for an employer, you will typically have an agreement that allows you to take a paid vacation or still get paid when you’re sick.

Moreover, you can even get paid for the untaken leave.

Regardless, when you work for yourself, you need to take this into account and plan for the possibility of being sick.
