7 Simple Tips How To Not Feel Overwhelmed as a New Mom Blogger

You just started your mom blog but you are already feeling overwhelmed as a new blogger. Maybe you just had a new baby or maybe your kids are already a little older and you finally decided that now is the time for you to start your blog for good reasons: you want to make money from home so that you can stay at home with your babies (just like me!). BUT you had no idea about half of the things you need to do as a blogger and no matter how many things you tick off your list, your to-do list keeps growing and so does the overwhelm. You’re a few months into blogging (or even longer, like me) and you’re reading about other mom bloggers’ massive successes after just 3 months. But you’re far away from that, like far-far-is that even possible?-far-away. (I know what it feels like because building my blog is slow too).

The overwhelm is getting so much that you’re wondering if it’s even all worth it or whether you should call it a day, quit your mom blog, and never tell anyone you even started. Or is there a way to deal with your overwhelm and keep going?

To help you stop feeling like an overwhelmed mommy blogger, I’ve put together 7 practical tips for you in this post, that worked for me. Those tips will help you not only deal with feeling overwhelmed when starting your mom blog, but also feel a little more human again.

Becoming a mom blogger is not an easy task when you’ve got a little human to look after. You’re already a busy mom as it is. And now you’re adding a bunch of new things to your already full plate (if you need help with the techy side of setting up your mom blog then check out my FREE tutorial here), some of which are totally out of your comfort zone and some that you didn’t even know were part of being a blogger, right?

So, it’s only normal that you have bad days where you’re feeling totally overwhelmed, the same way I do. But just know that it does not make you, or me, a bad mom. Quite the opposite, because you’re trying to build a better future for yourself and your family.

That’s why it can be even more frustrating when you’re trying hard but you’re feeling like the needle isn’t moving.

And maybe it won’t, at first.

Here’s why.

One of my favorite successful mom bloggers that I am obsessed with learning from is Carly Campbell from Mommy On Purpose (check out her amazing blog). And currently, I am going through her (incredible!!!) signature course Pinteresting Strategies (this is my affiliate link) and in this course, she’s repeating over and over that it takes at least 8 months before you’re seeing any kind of decent traffic to your blog. And that’s for her own blog, as well as her Pinterest pins, her students, and her niche site that she recently started to prove her strategies still work.

But before I give you the tips I thought it would be helpful to give you a little background on my story why I started my mom blog (if you’re interested but if not then feel free to skip over it and continue with the 7 Practical Tips here).

I started my mom blog AnyMommyCanMakeMoney in 2021, when my baby was 6 weeks old, with one post.

This is me starting my mom blog while my baby was asleep.

However, I made my first affiliate sale after my 3rd post which felt amazing. And it was even more amazing because at that time I had only 4 visitors to my blog.

But things have been slow since…

Some days I have 15 visitors on my blog and then the next day 3.

However, I continue to do keyword research and optimize my posts for SEO (search engine optimization), as I’ve learned from this free webinar here. I find it so exciting. And I am also continuing to take courses and read ebooks like these ones here.

And the needle is moving, slowly. BUT, it is moving.

Before I fell pregnant unexpectedly (what a blessing) I was making good money! I had slowly built up my business as a consultant for e-commerce brands and was working with clients all over the world. I loved every second of my job because I had been working for brands pretty much all my life in some of London’s top advertising agencies. But when I fell pregnant, I got morning sickness REALLY bad. So bad, that I could no longer consult clients.

This wasn’t the first time I felt burnt out from working with clients. On top of that, I didn’t like the fact that my income totally depended on me physically showing up. What if I got sick? What if the baby got sick and I couldn’t show up for work? At this point, I knew that I needed to switch my business away from being a service provider with one on one clients to a more passive approach, where I could literally sit behind my laptop whenever I had a spare second (even in my pajamas), especially as a new mom. Blogging had always appealed to me but I was scared to dive into the writing part because a) it’s not my first language and b) I wasn’t sure if my writing would be good enough for you to enjoy reading it (maybe let me know in the comments what you think).

Additionally, I am currently a single mom, as my partner is away working. So, there is just me looking after our 1 year old baby girl, potty training her, helping her through teething (hello sleepless nights), running the household, and trying to find time to write for my blog – It’s a LOT to do! (Oh, and I also try to have showers in between, haha).

The moments where I get more than 5 minutes to actually sit down during her nap time and write uninterruptedly are rare. But I am committed to helping you become a stay at home mommy too, and I am committed to my blog so that I am able to provide my daughter the most fantastic life and to inspire her one day that everything is possible for her.

7 Practical Tips To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed as a New Mom Blogger

I know that you are going through the motions of being a new mommy blogger too, so I put 7 practical tips together for you, that you can implement right away to feel on track again and also a little more human (you might find some of them really helpful, so definitely make sure you read all of them).

1. Know your audience

The first thing to help you avoid feeling overwhelmed as a new mom blogger is to get crystal clear on who you want to help. It might take you some time and a few blog posts to really figure this out and hone in on it. But once you know who you’re serving, you’ll understand what main problem you want to solve for your audience and what you need to cover in your blog posts.

Before you know exactly who your audience is, writing blog posts will just feel like you’re throwing spaghetti at the wall.

So you have to be ok to write 5, 10, 20odd blog posts before you fully understand whom you want to help and who’s not your audience.

For example, my audience are stay at home moms and the main problem is what to do to make money online so that they can stay at home with their kids. BUT, it took me a while to really hone in on that and find my angle.

Things get so much easier when you know who you’re writing for and you will no longer feel overwhelmed coming up with blog post ideas.

This tip will help you avoid a lot of overwhelm as a mom blogger, so start there!

2. Remember your goal and WHY (this is especially important when days get tough)

Whenever you’re having one of those bad days or feel like you’re losing track and your head is spinning with complete blogger overwhelm, remind yourself WHY you started your blog. So, take a moment right now and ask yourself what’s your main goal with your mom blog?

Next, grab a piece of paper and write it down. Then, put it somewhere where you can see it to remind yourself of it every time you need a bit of motivation.

3. Research your keywords

I don’t want to scare you away, because I did promise you in the beginning that this would not be an overly complicated post. However, researching your keywords is super important (and eye-opening) to help you understand what exactly your audience is searching for. And when you know what they actually want to read, creating content consistently feels less overwhelming for you.

4. Understand that everything takes time

You’re probably a little impatient and want to see instant-ish success (and income). And I am no different.

But, the reality is that before your blog appears on search engines, like Google, takes a lot of time for a number of reasons. First, Google waits a while before it “trusts” a new blog. This means that Google will most likely not rank your content straightaway before you prove to Google that you’re a trusted source and that you’re putting out quality content consistently. Most established mom bloggers have “aged domains”, which means any content they put out will rank much faster than coming from a new blog. 

5. Set priorities

Set priorities for important things that come first so that you’re not getting overwhelmed when different things need your attention at the same time.

For me, my baby girl is my priority followed by my blog. That means if she crawls past my desk trying to get my attention, I will always stop work to play with her instead of trying to crank out my post. And knowing that she comes first is important because this way I won’t get frustrated that I am not getting to finish my article on time. I rather stay up late or try and get up a half hour before her to get it done than to put her second.

Another one of my priorities is to aim for a clean house and kitchen. I wrote about my 11 Quick Cleaning Hacks How To Keep Your Home Always Looking Clean. But I find that I am feeling less overwhelmed and have a less cluttered mind when my surroundings are clean.

Do you know what your priorities are?

Maybe getting enough sleep is your priority or spending half an hour of alone time (even if that’s in front of the TV, reading time, or a short meditation). Next time you feel like things are growing over your head and you can feel the overwhelm come on, just stick to your priorities and work your way down.

Because whatever you need to do to be a happy mom, please do it. You’ll be able to blog and mom more easily if you’re not overwhelmed.

6. Only focus on one social media platform

No matter how many kids you’ve got, whether they are young children or older kids, there’s no doubt you’re on a busy schedule. The idea that you have to build an audience on social media accounts, engage in Facebook groups, and design beautiful Instagram stories to drive traffic to your blog can be a bit overwhelming, to say the least. That’s why my advice is to focus on one platform only until you get good traffic before you focus on another platform.

My focus at the moment is Pinterest.

Firstly because I once had success on Pinterest without having a strategy or really knowing what I was doing, back in 2014 (and I want to see if I can get it back). Back then I created a free Instagram brand challenge, which thousands of female entrepreneurs took (but I had no clue that I could monetize this back then), sold my online course, and had a few pins go viral. My Pinterest traffic, without seriously doing anything strategic, was 350K+monthly views. I stopped using Pinterest for a while and also changed my business around a lot. Now my traffic is at all-time low traffic with only 13.1K monthly views. OUCH! But since I implemented some of Carly’s strategies I’ve seen a bump instantly.

But the point that I am trying to make here is that I won’t stress about it and just continue to keep working on it every day, for the next 8 months and see what happens.

7. Meal plan

One thing that helps me massively not to feel overwhelmed is to order all my groceries online instead of going to the shops. But I also plan my meals with the $5 meal plan, which helps you completely take the guesswork out of what to make for dinner tonight. It’s sometimes discouraging to see that my blog doesn’t have a lot of traffic, and my Pinterest account doesn’t have a lot of views, but this helps to keep things in perspective! But don’t beat yourself up and remember that you’re just starting and everything will take time. Like I said in the post my Pinterest traffic crashed down completely because I didn’t nurture it. So I have to start from scratch as well. But just know that it is possible and I am sure you’ll see results soon. Every uptick in your traffic will be a testament to your hard work. My tip would be to keep a change log spreadsheet so that you can directly link what worked.
