But first, what is a Virtual Assistant? Maybe you’ve seen this term being thrown around on Facebook or maybe a friend of a friend of a friend is doing it. But you’ve been too embarrassed to ask what exactly do Virtual Assistants do… hands up…I was the same. But it’s actually really simple.

What is a Virtual Assistant

As a Virtual Assistant (VA) you are your own boss and work remotely from home for clients, offering a service you’re skilled in. You can either charge hourly or offer packages. How much money you can make depends on how many clients you take on, how many hours you can work, and how much you charge. But we’ll talk about this in more detail.

What do Virtual Assistants do

Typically, Virtual Assistant jobs used to only include scheduling meetings, setting up appointments, replying to emails, and general admin stuff.

BUT… with social media and digital marketing booming, the Virtual Assistant jobs you can do now are literally endless.

That means as a Virtual Assistant you could do all kinds of things such as making Pinterest pins, Pinterest SEO, writing emails, creating Printables, email marketing, SEO, website design, social media management, accounting, graphic design, video editing, freelance writing and so much more.

And in my opinion, this makes being a Virtual Assistant one of the best stay at home mom jobs you can do to make extra money.

Are you still not convinced?

Then let me give you an example.

Let’s say you enjoy creating pins in Canva and could see yourself doing this all day long. Then why not offer your pin design services and get paid to do it? My mom friend Megan makes an average of $5-$7K per month as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant working from home (with two kids).

Virtual Assistant jobs for beginners

When you’re just starting out as a beginner Virtual Assistant you’ve got two options:

Option 1: You can either start being a VA and offering any service to anyone, like scheduling meetings, doing a bit of research, email marketing or social media managing just to get the ball rolling and money coming in.

Option 2: Or, you can pick a niche that you’re not only interested in but also good at, for example designing Pins in Canva, posting Instagram stories, or writing blog posts. Because the more niche you are the more money you can charge your clients. But having a niche makes getting your next client a lot easier too.

The choice is entirely up to you, but both options allow you to set your own schedule, work your own hours, and do so from the comfort of your own home.

The best part about starting your own Virtual Assistant business is that you can do it as a flexible job or turn it into a full-time job.

Which gets us to your next question: “How much money can I make as a Virtual Assistant?”

Virtual Assistant Salary

I touched upon this already briefly but what you earn depends on how much time you have and how many hours you can work, as well as how much money you want to earn.

But the average Virtual Assistant makes around $50K a year whereas if you specialized your services and worked with a few higher ticket clients you could earn a full-time income of $100K+ per year.

But like I said, it also depends on:

  • how much money you want to earn or
  • how many hours you can work or
  • how much work you want to do with everything else you’ve got going on in your mom life.

What qualifications do I need to be a Virtual Assistant?

You might be wondering “What qualifications do I need to be a Virtual Assistant?” or “How do I become a Virtual Assistant with no experience?” and this is a legit question.

So let’s look at the 2 most important skills you need.

Virtual Assistant Skills

The two most important skills to have as a Virtual Assistant are: Passion and expertise.

You want to be passionate about what you do, but you also want to have a level of expertise that gets results for your clients.

Personally, I have worked with and hired Virtual Assistants both in the advertising agencies that I worked for and in my own business.

And I know the best Virtual Assistants are those who are specialized in a particular niche that they are passionate about.

I’ve always preferred a Virtual Assistant who is an expert in their niche and insanely passionate about it over a Virtual Assitant that does everything, even if they had much lower rates.

So, just ask yourself this simple question. How crazy passionate are you about the service you’re going to offer to your clients? For example, if you’ve got a really strong Pinterest account and love to design new pins then maybe this could be a clue.

Besides passion and expertise here are some traits you should have. Which ones do you have?

Some of the Virtual Assistant skills include:

  • Great communicator
  • Positive “can-do” attitude
  • Willingness to go above and beyond to meet your clients’ goals
  • Ability to listen to what your client really needs
  • Being resourceful with the budget you’re given (the same goes for timeframes)
  • Able to stick to deadlines
  • Being the initiator rather than the client having to chase you
  • On time for meetings
  • Always thinking a step ahead for your clients
  • Strive for brilliant results not just settle for second best
  • Trustworthy
  • Keeping your clients’ details confidential
  • Spinning more than one plate at once
  • Managing skills
  • Basic design skills
  • A love for Canva
  • Basic computer skills
  • Know how to use Google Drive, Docs, spreadsheets
  • just to name a few.

The only thing left to do is to pick which Virtual Assistant job is right for you.

3. YouTube Virtual Assistant

Help your clients grow their YouTube channel.

If you love YouTube video content and spent a lot of time on YouTube, then maybe this could be something to focus on for your VA business?

This one is a lesser-known niche but I reckon it will take off big because more content is headed for video.

As a YouTube Virtual Assistant, you help your clients’ channels with:

  • Editing and uploading YouTube videos
  • Creating end frames
  • Designing video cover
  • Keyword research and SEO (search engine optimization)
  • Marketing to promote the videos
  • Engaging with comments
  • Coming up with fresh content ideas based on trends

Do you have a knack for writing and simply love copy? You could be in high demand. Check out this next Virtual Assistant job.

4. Copywriter Virtual Assistant

Every business needs good copywriters. Copywriting is one of the most sought-after and highly paid niches because good copy can make or break a business.

Actually, good copywriters are difficult to find. When you’re a good copywriter, clients will grab on to you with both hands and never let you go – as long as the results are good.

You’re even harder to replace once you’ve learned the tone of voice and writing style of the brand you’re writing for, and you know the demographic you’re writing for inside and out. If you’re really great at copywriting then you can charge premium rates because your clients know that you will help make them a lot of money.

As a Copywriter Virtual Assistant you’ll be helping your clients:

  • With content creation
  • Writing magazine articles
  • Blog posts
  • Presentation copy
  • Sales funnel
  • Ad copy like Facebook ads
  • Social media copy
  • Brochure copy
  • Sales page copy
  • Email marketing campaigns
  • Sales letter
  • Landing page copy

I know how high in demand copywriters are because I used to work with a copywriter for over 7 years in London’s top advertising agencies and we were constantly booked. And our rates weren’t cheap! (We were charging $450/day and $920/day on weekends, EACH!)

A good place to start: If you already have a passion to write about a certain topic then this niche would be a good place to start focusing on.

Are you already interested in the real estate market? Maybe this could be the right niche for you to focus on.

5. Real Estate Virtual Assistant

Are you curious as to how to become a Real Estate Virtual Assistant?

Becoming a Real Estate Virtual Assistant is a lucrative niche and one of those where the more experience you have, the better.

As a Real Estate Virtual Assistant you’ll need basic computer and software skills so that you can:

  • Keep the database up to date on new listings or clients details
  • Setting up appointments for home inspections, key handovers, or repairs
  • Social media management
  • Generating new leads
  • Designing marketing materials for “just sold/ listed” properties
  • Managing the distribution of marketing materials in the local area
  • Know how to use Dropbox or Google Drive to share documents
  • Answering comments or chat questions prospects have.

The main task however is to help keep the listings online up to date with the right images of the property, description, price, and property details as most buyers look online to find their new place.

Do you have an eye for graphic design? Then I think you would enjoy the next Virtual Assistant job I’ve got lined up for you. Ready?

  • Events
  • Web graphics
  • Ads
  • Ebooks
  • Printables

Unless you agree to work full-time for a client, you can take on multiple clients on retainer.

What is a retainer fee?

A retainer fee means you’re getting a certain amount of money paid upfront in exchange for doing an agreed-on service.

There is no limit to the number of clients you can work with on retainer, which means the sky is the limit on how much you can earn.

That means you can work with numerous smaller clients to reach your monthly income goals. Working on this side hustle gives you the flexibility to work around your kids and family life as long as you meet your deadlines.

Are you good at managing many things at once while staying calm and collective? Then I am sure this VA role sounds like you. Check it out.

  • Photo retouching

I told you in the beginning that by the end of this post your head will be spinning full of ideas. And I hope yours is spinning like crazy right now, in a good way.

So let’s look at the things you need to get started.

What do I need to get started as a VA?

A blog or a website. Check out my free tutorial here on how to start a blog and the exact steps to take.

To get started as a Virtual Assistant, you’ll need a:

  • Package that outlines your services and what you’re able to provide to your clients
  • Service agreement that outlines your fees
  • Pricing structure: how much do you charge
  • (optional) Portfolio of the previous work you’ve done in your niche (use client testimonials if you have)

It will take time to get used to your new client and what they need, how they work, and so on. But the main thing is that you understand the problem you’re there to help them solve. Although it is important that you really listen to your client it is also important for your client that you’re confident enough to lead the way. Because ultimately you’re the expert they hired to get them the results they want.

Where to find Virtual Assistant jobs

The first things you should try are Facebook groups. Because chances are your potential clients are hanging out there. I hired my last VA’s straight off Facebook. Just be specific about what you can do really well and what your clients can expect. Don’t bend over backward just to get the job, unless you’re seriously interested in getting into a specific niche. Because you’ll end up getting a job you don’t enjoy doing. Rather go for the things you love because when you love what you do, its shows and you will enjoy it so much more.

Who hires VA’s?

Your clients can come from literally anywhere, whether those are big companies, corporate companies, small businesses, local businesses, bloggers, or other stay at home moms setting up an online business.

There is a lot of work going around for you if you work as a VA. In essence, as a Virtual Assistant you’re helping clients do the work they lack the time or skills to complete and are looking to you for help in achieving their goals.

How to get your first client

To get started: Post on Facebook that you’re offering Virtual Assistant services and get your first clients.

Just take a look at this screengrab I took here. This lady is saying that she’s thinking of starting a VA business (which means she doesn’t have any experience yet). However, two people are interested straight away in her services. Doesn’t that blow your mind to what you could do?

Screengrab taken by AnyMommyCanMakeMoney

Additionally, you can set up a Facebook page and post about your services. Let people know what you do and give them a good reason why they should hire you.

What you’ll need:

  • A niche
  • An offer
  • A package/ pricing plan
  • Testimonial of some sort would be helpful but not mandatory
  • Social media posts to put out
  • Service agreement

To get your first clients, consider offering your services at a reduced rate to give potential clients an irresistible offer they can’t refuse before you charge a higher price to get a testimonial in return that will help you attract more clients. (I did that when I was working as a business coach. I offered my 3-month coaching package for $2K to my first clients and later raised my prices to $5K).
