10 things you need to make money on Etsy
Here are 10 tips on how to make printables that sell on Etsy:
1. Decide on who your customer is
The first thing you’ve got to do is to identify your niche.
You want to research the market and identify a specific niche or audience that you want to target with your printables, such as wedding invitations, wall art, or planner inserts.
Ask yourself who is the customer for that you’re creating printables.
If your audience is “moms” go a little deeper to understand what she’s trying to achieve.
For example:
- Moms who want to budget
- Moms who want to meal plan
- Moms who love lists, like to-do lists, chore lists, cleaning list
- Moms who homeschool
- Moms who want to manifest their dream life
- and so on!
2. Think about what else this customer wants
The next step is to think about what printables this customer might also want.
Because…
creating printables that your customers would also be interested in is the key to making money on Etsy.
For example,
Instead of selling fitness trackers, mood trackers, and meal planners in your shop if your customers are moms who want to learn how to budget, you could sell printables in your shop that help create weekly budgets, but also savings challenges, budget trackers for kids, cash envelopes, vacation planner budgets and so on.
Your printables shop could look like this:
Rather than creating many different printables, you want to only think about printables that would suit your customer. This is the key to a profitable Etsy shop.
You can download this free worksheet here and try it for your own shop. Trust me, if done right, this simple worksheet could help make you a lot of money.
3. Product research
The third point in making money selling printables on Etsy is to research which printables are already popular. Because you don’t want to waste your time creating printables that nobody is searching for.
To help me find products that are in high demand I use EverBee, which I absolutely love.
With EverBee’s free version, you can research which printables are already selling well.
Not only will you see the top-selling printables, but also the top keywords people use to find them, as well as how much they sell for and how many exactly they sold last month.
4. Test different listings
If you’re only taking one thing away from this article it’s that you need to test different listings.
Honestly, I can’t stress this enough but testing different combinations is key to getting sales on Etsy!
For example, if you’re starting out with one printable product, then you want to create at least 5 different listings for this item and upload them to your shop.
- Create a different thumbnail for each of your listings
- Choose different keywords in your titles
- Use different tags for your listing
- Mix up new keywords in your item description to test which ones lead to sales.
In the beginning, I had one digital product and 20 different listings for it.
Eventually, I found the one combination that works.
There is no magic number you need to aim for. Just test until you find the combination that sells.
Based on my experience, the listings I thought would do well didn’t and the listings I didn’t think would do well did.
5. Create high-quality designs
Use design software like Canva to create high-quality, eye-catching designs that are unique and relevant to your target market. Be sure to use high-resolution images and fonts that are easy to read.
Canva is particularly great because it offers you a ton of printable template options that you can customize and sell in your Etsy shop. However, always make sure that you create your own designs with the templates instead of just selling the template you found on Canva.
6. Offer a variety of products
Consider offering a variety of printable products within your niche, such as different sizes or color options, to give customers more choices and increase the likelihood of making a sale.
Etsy likes it when your shop feels “full” when customers find it (10+ listings).
So, adding variations of one product can be a simple way to fill up your shop.
Just ask yourself “What other printables would my customer enjoy?“
7. Price your products competitively
Research what other sellers are charging for similar products and price your printables competitively.
This free software can help you with that.
Consider the cost of production, listing fees, and any other expenses associated with running your Etsy shop.
8. Optimize your listings
Use relevant keywords in your product titles and descriptions to improve your visibility in Etsy search results.
Use high-quality images that showcase your designs and make them easy to preview and download. EverBee is the best keyword research tool for Etsy I’ve found on the market and you can get started with a free version here.
9. Provide excellent customer service
Respond promptly to customer inquiries and provide exceptional customer service to encourage positive reviews and repeat business.
This will also earn your Etsy shop the “Star Seller” badge.
10. Promote your listings
Use social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to promote your printables and drive traffic to your Etsy shop. Consider running paid advertising campaigns on these platforms to reach a larger audience (but only once you’ve found your best-selling printable).
But you might still wonder if it’s really worth your time and money.
So let’s find out next.

However, the key to making money selling printables on Etsy is to test different keywords and listing photos to see which ones your audience resonates with.
Why sell on Etsy
The good thing about Etsy is that it is a popular marketplace for digital downloads, and it has a large and engaged audience that is specifically looking for unique and creative products.
